My Summer—er, Year—in Armenia, part 2

My previous talk at the Metropolitan Breakfast Club on September 14, 2022 was about my summer in Armenia.  Shortly after this talk, I returned to Armenia to work for the Armenian Ministry of Economy to build a technology transfer office to help commercialize scientific innovations found in Armenia’s research centers.  During this time, Armenia lost a war to Azerbaijan; accepted tens of thousands of Russians and Ukrainians escaping the war; and moved 125,000 refugees after the lost war with Azerbaijan. Russia has a military base in Armenia, the US has its second largest foreign embassy there, and Iran, with a new consulate along the Azeri-Armenia border, has drawn a line in the sand against the Azeri’s.

For some unknown reason, they all seem to coexist in Armenia.

If you enjoyed my first talk, this update will provide some additional context.  This post-Soviet country has its challenges and some intriguing opportunities.

About our speaker:

Mihran Aroian (Myron O’Ryan on St. Patrick’s Day) is originally from Boston. He took a wrong turn off the Massachusetts Turnpike and somehow ended up in Texas. Mihran is on the faculty at the UT McCombs school and a visiting professor at the Manoogian Simone College of Business & Economics in Yerevan Armenia.

Mihran has an eclectic background as a scientist, venture capitalist, entrepreneur, and instructor.  Previously, Mihran was the co-founder of TMI Capital, Amicus Networks, and Science Partners.  Having worked for Austin Ventures, Mihran has a background in working with entrepreneurial firms in the US and Armenia and is currently consulting with a cardiovascular biotech company in Boston and three scientific technologies in Armenia.
