The One Ann Only

Author, and founder of the Ann Richards Legacy Project, Margaret Justus will discuss the legacy of the 45th governor of Texas, Ann Richards, and her book, The One Ann Only: Wit and Wisdom from Texas Governor Ann Richards. Featured prominently in the 2022 Texas Book Festival and selected as one of the best non-fiction books of 2022 by the Texas Observer, "The One Ann Only" features a collection of photographs alongside powerful quotes from Richards' trailblazing career in Texas politics, capturing the unique singularity of the last Democratic governor of the Lone Star State. Justus, who served as Richards' deputy press secretary from 1989 to 1994, envisioned a book offering i Richards wise quotes and rare photos, in addition to a timeline of her life, starting as top high-school debater, to being elected the first woman Travis County commissioner and as Texas’ first woman to be elected Governor in her own right in 1990

About our speaker:

Margaret Justus has served as communications lead for ten Texas campaigns including working with former Texas Lieutenant Governor Hobby to pass a Texas constitutional amendment in 2009 in support of creating more tier-one research universities in Texas and as the Texas Press  Secretary for President Bill Clinton's 1996 reelection bid. As a former broadcast journalist she has worked as a reporter, producer, anchor and assignments editor.

Justus founded the Ann Richards Legacy Project in 2021, a nonprofit that created and displayed 300 street banners of Ann Richards in major Texas cities across the state. The banners honored the 30th anniversary of the inauguration of governor Richards, and led to the publication of the book, “The One Ann Only: Wit and Wisdom from Texas Governor Ann Richards.” Justus is currently working on a permanent public art tribute to the Governor to be located in the Texas capital city.
